Intermittent fasting seems to be all the craze right now and to be honest, it's probably something that a lot of people have been doing inadvertently for some time now. Think about this for a minute, have you or someone you know ever said "I can't eat breakfast in the morning, it makes me sick"?
If so, chances are, you went hours after waking before you ate something. That, in essence, is a form of intermittent fasting.
The science is still out on whether or not there is any real or lasting benefits to this style of eating, but one thing is for sure, it doesn't seem to help with weight lose if you are not in a caloric deficit. However, with that being said, it has seemed to have helped people control the amount of food they eat over the course of the day. So in that sense, it seems to have some redeeming qualities. Though it should be noted that this is more anecdotal than anything.
In any case, there doesn't seem to be anything magical about intermittent fasting, just another way to manipulate the frequency and amount of food you eat at one sitting.
